Lions come up short in tough battle against Transylvania

The Basics

In the quarterfinals of the HCAC tournament, the Lions took on the Pioneers of Transylvania University. In a tough, four-set match the Lions weren't able to come out with the win, losing 3-1.

How It Happened

The Lions struggled to find their offense early in the first set. After a quick time out from the Lions, Sydney Wilzbach (Cincinnati, OH / Northwest) brought the team back into the match with a seven point service run. Both teams battled to take the lead but continued to trade points. Transylvania would go on a run but the Mount effectively countered. Late errors by the Lions gave Transylvania the first set with a final score of 25-21. The Lions got off to a hot start in the second set, winning five of the first six points. Transylvania kept the score close but the Lions defense was too much. Crafty kills from Riley Brunner (Lawrenceburg, IN / Lawrenceburg) led the Lions to a quick 25-17 victory over Transylvania. The Mount started the third set off slow, unable to create offense. Transylvania capitalized on the Lions errors to build a quick lead. The deficit would be too much for the Lions, dropping the third set 25-13. The Mount wouldn't lose hope going into the fourth set. The score was close early in the set but a service ace by Karlie Schell (West Harrison, IN / Franklin County) gave the Lions some breathing room. Transylvania found a way to battle back and take the lead late in the set. The Lions left it all on the line in the final points but weren't able to come out with a win, losing the set 25-20.

Riley Brunner was the Lions main offensive weapon in the match, earning 11 kills. Karlie Schell was great for the Lions defense, grabbing 23 digs.
