MIDWAY, Kentucky - The Mount St. Joseph University women's tennis team hit the road yesterday for their first away match of the season. They traveled down interstate 75 to take on an NAIA opponent the Eagles of Midway College. The Lions fought hard but dropped their first match of the season 6-3, and now stand 1-1 on the year.
As is customary the match got underway with the doubles portion of the event. Katie Fellinger (North Bend, Ohio/Taylor) and Jessica Berger (Milan, Ind./Milan) got the Lions lone win in doubles, securing a 6-2 victory in the number three doubles match.
Tessa Mayes (Cincinnati, Ohio/Colerain) was able to secure a victory in the number five singles match, winning her sets 6-1, 6-2. The Lions secured another point as Kelsey Knodell (Delaware, Ohio/Rutherford B. Hayes) was awarded a walkover victory in the number six singles match.
Despite singles losses, Fellinger and freshman Erin Kallmeyer (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) fought hard in their matches. Both players were beaten soundly in their first set, before four games in their second set.
The Lions will next take to the court on Saturday, September 14 as they travel to HCAC foe Franklin College.
