The Mount Women's Soccer Team Picked to Finish 1st in HCAC

The Mount St. Joseph women's soccer team was predicted to finish 1st in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference by a pre-season coaches poll. The Lions are coming off of a season where they finished with a program high 17 wins and 2nd in the HCAC with a record of 7-2. The Lions made a strong post-season run but were unable to pull out a win against Franklin in the HCAC Championship game.

Head coach Josh Hess is excited for this upcoming year but is also ready for the challenge. He says, "Being voted pre-season #1 is a compliment from all of the other programs in our conference and we are thankful to be thought of so highly. However, while this is a nice headline we know that our pre-season ranking will not help us against any of our opponents this season. We said goodbye to a huge senior class this spring and we know that If we want to be worthy of a #1 ranking we have to prove it through a long and challenging season and have a great deal of work in front of us."

The Lions return the young squad that led them to the conference tournament the previous year while bringing in 12 new players. The Mount was awarded many awards in the post season including eight All-HCAC awards, three All-Region awards, and Kaylan Gruber (Harrison, OH / Harrison) was named Third Team All-American. Gruber played a huge part in the Lions success last season, finishing second in the HCAC in goals scored with 13. Senior student-athlete Taylor Murphy (Batavia, OH / Batavia) returns to lead a spectacular Lions defense from the previous year. Expect the Lions upperclassmen to take the lead as they head into the 2018-19 season! Check for more updates on the Lions season.
