The Mount St. Joseph University women's lacrosse faced off against the Quakers of Earlham College in a conference game on Wednesday. The Mount was able to get a quick lead with Earlham fighting back until the Lions ran away. For the first time this season The Mount finished at halftime with the lead of 11-4. The Lions kept the momentum going in the second half to give us a final score of 18-9.
How it Happened:
Mount's very own Courtney Gleason (Cincinnati, OH/Seton) was the first to snag a goal her first of many in this record breaking game. Earlham ticked one away but sophomore Brianna Brannon (Cincinnati, OH/Seton) snagged a goal to take the lead. Earlham tied the score back up at 2 before the Lions went off to a streak of five unanswered goals from Gleason, Gabriella Halfhill (Liberty Township, OH/ Lakota West), Maria Sams (Cincinnati, OH/ Oak Hills), and two from Kara Marshall (Cleveland, OH/ Laurel) assisted from Brannon and Sams respectively to take a huge lead of 7-2. Earlham found a way to sneak sandwich goals around another Gleason goal. The half ended with a trifecta of unassisted goals from each of the Mount's captains Sams, Marshall and Gleason.
The second half rolled around and the Lions had no intention of letting the Quakers make a comeback. Gleason found Marshall to start the second half they way they ended the first with the ball finding the back of the goal. After Earlham got on the board for the first time this half Gleason made way to get another goal off of a free position shot. The Quakers answered back with a pair of goal bringing the score to 13-7. Brannon fought back first with the first of three goals to define the lead. Gleason followed in suit with two pairs of goals separated by one opposing team goal.
If you were keeping track you would see that Courtney Gleason broke a Mount St. Joseph Women's Lacrosse record with 9 goals in a single game. This is the second honor she has received this season and she doesn't plan on stopping.
Our Lions will compete in a conference matchup at home against Westminster Saturday 4/7 at 12:00 pm at Schueler Field (Cincinnati, OH).
