Carmel, Indiana - The Mount St. Joseph women's golf team is hoping to have a big year this season as they are expected to finish in fourth place in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference preseason poll, voted on by the league coaches.
Transylvania University leads at the top of the pack as they will be defending their 2018 HCAC Championship. The Pioneers received 87 points with six first place votes. Rose-Hulman comes in at a close second in this years pre-season poll with 83 points and three first place votes. Taking third is Hanover College who received 70 points. Mount St. Joseph finished up the top four, receiving 64 points as Earlham, Franklin, Manchester, Bluffton, Defiance and Anderson round out the poll.
The Lions hope to build off of last year's success after a couple of third place finishes and the programs first team win in history.
Returning for the Lions this year includes senior Emma Schrand (Cincinnati, Ohio/McAuley), juniors Hayley Quatman (Cincinnati, Ohio/McAuley) and Isabella Olthaus (Cincinnati, Ohio/Seton), and sophomore Patricia Windholtz (Newark, Ohio/Newark Catholic), who have all been named as players to watch.
Head coach Joe Sparhawk has this to say about the upcoming season: " I believe this is a fair assessment of where we are within the league and with everyone coming back. After a good run in the championship last season and a great confidence build from the spring/summer we hope to find ourselves pushing at the top again this year. We are facing some tough competition but, we have a shot when we play at our strongest."
This Lions begin the season on August 31st, hosting the first round of the Stateline Shootout at Miami Whitewater Forest Golf Course. Check out MSJSports.com for all of the Lions women's golf coverage of the 2019 season!
