CINCINNATI, OH - The Mount St. Joseph University Lions hosted the Panthers of Hanover College in this incredibly close conference battle. The Panthers were in a three way tie for first place with a 7-1 conference record while the Lions sat in fourth place with a 4-4 record. The Lions were able to come back from a 6 point deficit mounted to a 10 point lead and ended the game with a final score of 70-69 and another conference victory!
In the first quarter The Mount was surrounded by all the students back from winter break ready to cheer them on to a win. The score would switch teams going from the Lions up by 5 points to the point when the Panthers were ahead 6 points, their largest lead of the game. Each team battled and were able to finish the quarter all tied up at 17-17. The second quarter was just as intense with the lead switching 4 times and the score coming back to a tie 4 more times. In the last minute of of the first half The Mount found a way to pull ahead and finish the first half with a four point lead.
At the beginning of the second half the Lions came out strong to have their largest lead of the game of 12 points with just over four minutes left in the quarter. The Panthers turned up the intensity and were able to make up the ground they lost and finish the third quarter only trailing the Lions 51-55.
The fourth quarter was nothing short of an intense nail biter. The Mount was able to keep their lead comfortably for most of the fourth quarter until Hanover found a way to take a two point lead over The Mount with less than a minute left in regulation time. When all looked grim and there were only 22 seconds left in the game Mackenzie Marcum (Mason, OH/ Kings) made a shot from behind the three point arc that fell right through the basket giving the Lions the lead with a score of 70-69. The Mount had to hold off the Panthers offensive attacks for a few more seconds to come out with the narrow victory!
Maddie Haberthy (Cincinnati, OH/ Mercy) led The Mount offensively accumulating 25 points! Lainee Studer (Pleasant Plain, OH/ Little Miami) was also able to make a splash achieving 12 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 steals and 2 blocks. Alehia Tucker (Covington, KY/ Holy Cross) accounted for 9 rebounds, 7 assists, and 5 steals, while still being able to score 7 points. Marcum totaled 11 points in the game which includes her game winning three point shot.
