CINCINNATI, Ohio - Mount St. Joseph University senior women's basketball player Lainee Studer (Pleasant Plain, Ohio/Little Miami) became the newest member of the exclusive 1,000-point club in the Lions 54-51 loss to Spalding on Friday.
Studer came into the game needing just 12 points to eclipse the 1,000 point mark and thats exactly what she got. She scored her 1,000th point at the 1:12 mark of the third quarter, on a made free-throw attempt. The game was stopped briefly to recognize Studer and her accomplishment, she was presented with a game ball by coach Benjamin.
Sophmore Maddie Haberthy (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mercy) led the Lions offense with a team-high 18 points. Haberthy was 7-for-18 from the field, and 3-of-8 from behind the three-point line. She almost willed the Mount back into the game, scoring the teams last nine points, but it was too little to late. The Lions were trailing by 11 when Haberthy started her run, and along with stout defense the team cut the lead down to three.
And with less than 4 seconds on the clock the Lions had a Studer three-ball in the air that would have forced overtime. It was not to be as the ball rimmed out and Spalding closed out the win.
The Lions will enjoy the Christmas Holiday before welcoming the Colonels of Centre College to the Harrington Center on Saturday, December 29th. The game is scheduled for a 2:00 PM tip-off, tune into MSJsports.com for all of your live game coverage!
