TERRE HAUTE, Indiana - The Mount St. Joseph softball team traveled to Terre Haute, Ind. on Saturday to taking on the Fightin' Engineers of Rose-Hulman in a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference double-header. The Lions were dominant on the day taking down Rose-Hulman 8-0 in game one and 11-0 in game two.
GAME ONE - Mount St. Joseph 8, Rose-Hulman 0 - Final/5
The Lions jumped out to a quick lead in game one, scoring two runs in the top of the first inning. Brandy Bunch (Mason, Ohio/Mason) delivered the big blow, drilling a two-out, two-run double to straight away centerfield to get the Lions on the board. They would add three runs in both the third and fourth innings to get enough runs to bring the mercy rule into play.
In the third inning Paige Hampton (Versailles, Ky. /Woodford Co.) and Bunch each registered an RBI, and another run scored on a Rose-Hulman error. In the fourth inning Olivia Quick (Sunman, Ind. /East Central) led off with an infield single, which was followed by a walk to Alehia Tucker (Covington, Ky. /Holy Cross). Then Brooke Otto (Brookville, Ind. /Franklin Co.) laced a two-run double into left center to give the Lions a 7-0 lead. Just one batter later the Lions added another run as Hampton drove in Otto for her second RBI in the game.
Starting the game on the mound for The Mount was Sarah Miller (Fischers, Ind. /St. Theodore Guerin). Miller, the Lions ace was as dominant as she has been all season. She threw 4.0 innings allowing 4-hits, while striking out 4 and not allowing a run. She gave way in the bottom of the fifth inning to Kendall McCool (Brookville, Ind. /Franklin Co.), who was perfect in her only inning of work.
GAME TWO - Mount St. Joseph 11, Rose-Hulman 0 - Final/5
After how quickly the Lions jumped out of the gate in game one, it was hard to believe they would better that effort in game two. They absolutely did, as in the top of the first inning the Lions sent 15 batters to the plate in the inning. The nine run outburst was the biggest inning of the season for The Mount. Both Tucker and Hampton registered multiple hits in the first inning alone. Katie Tarter (Fairfield, Ohio/Fairfield), Gracie Woodyard (Plainfield, Ind. /Avon), Brianna Kauf (Orrville, Ohio/Orrville), along with Miller, Tucker and Hampton all drove in runs in the inning. Hampton drove in three in the inning, with one coming in her first at-bat and two coming from the second.
The Lions would add two more runs in the top of the third inning, with Bunch and Woodyard each adding another RBI.
On the hill for the Lions to open the game was the lone senior on the pitching staff, Bri Kauf. She threw the first two innings of the game, allowing only one hit. As has been the norm for Coach Goderwis, Kauf gave way to fire balling freshman Kamryn McCool (Brookville, Ind. /Franklin Co.). McCool took over in the bottom of the third inning with an 11-0 lead. She was dominant again for The Mount, going 3.0 innings allowing one hit and striking out three.
