The Basics: After dropping a four set match to #5 Dominican University, the Lions went on to win two straight matches. They defeated both Elmira College and Marian University in three straight sets to finish the weekend 2-1.
How it Happened:
MSJ vs. Dominican
In the Lions first match against #5 Dominican the Lions got off to a slow start. The Lions would tie the score halfway through the set which led to a close game. The score was tied at 24 in the first set but the Lions weren't able to find the floor, dropping the first set 26-24. The Mount quickly to a lead to start the second set but Dominican wasn't going to let up easily. The score was kept very close, neither team able to pull away from the other. An attack error from the Stars and a kill from Andrew Chisholm (Cincinnati, OH / Oak Hills) gave the Lions the second set 25-22. The Lions once again started the third set with a big lead but this time Dominican wasn't going to fold. The Lions lead was 17-9 before Dominican would start to chip away at the deficit, coming back to tie the score at 20. The Lions lost their momentum and weren't able to finish the set, dropping the third 25-23. The fourth set started off as a back and forth affair, but Dominican capitalized on the Lions errors to take a lead. The Mount struggled to find their offense in the final points, dropping the set 25-19 and the match 3-1.
MSJ vs. Elmira
In the Lions second match of the day they faced Elmira College in a late night matchup. Neither team was able to build momentum early with the score going back and forth. The Lions found themselves down until a 10 point service run from Christian Ales () gave the Lions a huge lead. The Mount would go on to take the set easily 25-18. The second set started off like the first, neither team able to build a strong lead. The score was tied at 17 until another strong service run by Adam Williams (Chicago, IL / Mt. Carmel) gave the Lions the cushion they needed to win the set. A block from Darien Bradley (Las Vegas, NV / Arbor View) and Chisholm gave the Lions the second set 25-20. Due to the late start time, you could tell both teams were exhausted. The final set started off slow but another mid-set surge by the Lions gave them a comfortable lead to coast to a victory. Williams would cap off the match with a kill to give the Lions the final set 25-20 in a 3-0 victory.
