CINCINNATI, Ohio—The Midwest Collegiate Volleyball League has announced for the first time this season that Joey Piazza (Cuyahoga Falls, OH / Walsh Jesuit) has earned defensive player of the week. Piazza is in his second year at The Mount, studying biomedical sciences.
In the Lions first matches of the season they traveled to New Jersey to take on Saint Joseph's College (L.I.), Sage College, and the host #7 Kean University. Piazza racked up 39 digs over the Lions 1-2 weekend while also dishing out 10 assist. In the Lions first match against Saint Joseph's College (L.I.) Pizza registered 18 digs and seven assist in a five-set loss. In their final match of the day the Lions would take on #7 Kean University where Piazza earned 20 digs and three assist in a four-set loss to the Cougars.
Head coach Cristina Webb has nothing but good things to say about her sophomore libero. "Piazza is a steady force. You can always count on him to make big plays."
The Lions look to improve their record this weekend as they travel to Pennsylvania to take part in another tri match. In the first day of competition the Lions will take on #6 Juniata College and will finish the weekend facing #13 Nazareth College and Penn State Altoona.
