Richmond, Ind - In a Saturday afternoon matchup the Lions traveled to Earlham College to open up conference play. The Lions took the lead early and didn't look back to end their winning drought with a victory of 3-1.
The Lions would get on the board first with captain Joshua Bailey (Winchester, Ky./George Rogers Clark) receiving the ball just outside the box turning to his right then firing a shot to the bottom right corner which would find the net and give the Lions a 1-0 lead in the 23rd minute. It didn't take long for the Lions to extend their lead. After an attempted cross by Freshman Cole Mericle (Lima, Ohio/Lima) the ball would go for a corner kick. The ball is then crossed in and is initially headed out by Earlham but captain Justin Ives (Florence, Ky./St. Henry) is able to get a head on the ball and get it past the keeper to push the score to 2-0 in the 26th minute. The offense stalled for both teams going into halftime with a score of 2-0. After halftime both teams exchanged shots but Earlham was able to trim the lead to 2-1 after cross was headed in by Joel Michael Nti-Kye. After a couple shots from the Lions they were able to extend their lead once again. This time it was Cole Mericle with goal. Mericle received the ball outside of the box and from about 25 yards he rocketed a shot towards the bottom left corner which found the net past the keeper to push the Mount's lead to 3-1 in the 61st minute. The Lions ended the game with a total of 10 shots and were able to fend off the Quakers in the second half when they had a total of 8 shots to give them the victory with a score of 3-1.
