Lions dominate UC Clermont with 6-1 victory

Cincinnati, OHIO - The Mount St. Joseph Lions hosted the Cougars of UC Clermont Saturday, September 14th. The Lions were looking for a bounce back game to help them reach .500.

The Lions got on the attack early in this contest and came out firing. The Mount came out with 4 shots in the first 17 minutes and one found the net. Junior Justin Ives (Florence, Ky./St. Henry) found the back of the net from a beautiful ball played by Sophomore Joshua Bailey (Winchester, Ky./George Rogers Clark). Not much time would come off the clock before the Lions would score again. This time it is Joshua Bailey doing the scoring and puts the Lions ahead 2-0. Both teams would then exchange shots before The Mount would find the goal once again. Another beautiful ball played into the box by Sophomore Joshua Bailey finds the foot of Senior Nathan Schmeusser (West Harrison, Ind./East Central) in the 41st minute which extends the Lions lead to 3-0. It isn't long before UC Clermont responds with a goal for themselves in the 42nd minute. The Lions head into halftime with a good 3-1 lead.

The Lions offensive attack starts off slow to start out the half. Both teams exchanged shots before The Mount started pounding the goal with shots. The Lions got off 4 shots before UC Clermont gave up a penalty shot to the Lions. The penalty was taken by Junior Justin Ives and pushed the Lions lead to 4-1 in the 71st minute. The Lions attack didn't slow down even with a 3 goal lead. With a corner kick surrendered by the cougars Freshman Noah Weidner (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) lines up to cross the ball in. But, instead of crossing the ball Weidner somehow finds the back of the net and gives the Lions a 5-1 lead. With the offense still in attack mode the Lions get another shot and Sophomore Cameron Willis (Cincinnati, Ohio/Lasalle) receives a ball played in by Senior Zachary Tegge (Cincinnati, Ohio) and is able to hammer it home in the 88th minute to close the game out. The Lions defense played spectacular in the contest allowing 8 shots with only 3 on target.

The Lions next head to New Concord, Ohio to take on the Fighting Muskies of Muskingum on Wednesday, September 18th with kickoff starting at 7:00PM. You can catch the Lions back at Schueler Field on Friday, September 20th as they take on Grace Christian (Mich.) at 4:00PM. Continue to check out MSJSports.com for more updates on the Lions 2019 season!
