Mount St. Joseph (13-6, 10-2 HCAC) defeated Manchester (10-9, 7-5 HCAC) 74-69, to remain alone atop the HCAC standings.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The first half was a back and forth struggle, as neither team could take control throughout the first 20 minutes. The Lions though began to separate themselves a bit over the final 3:24 of the half, as they closed on an 8-2 run which was capped by a three-pointer by senior Joel Scudder with only 12 seconds to play, which helped the Lions to a 37-29 halftime lead.
The second half started off well for the Mount as Scudder knocked down a three-pointer on three of the first four second half possessions. His sharp shooting allowed the Lions to stretch the lead to 16 less than three minutes into the second half. The lead grew to as many as 18 on multiple occasions for the Mount. But the Spartans did not stop fighting. Matt Brown, who scored 18 points in the second half for Manchester, cut the lead to 3 with 35 seconds to play. The Spartans had the ball down 3 with only 18 seconds to play and an opportunity to take the final shot and possibly send the game into overtime, when Scudder stepped in front of a pass, got the steal and raced in for a lay-up as time expired to seal the game for the Lions.
Scudder led all scorers with 30 points, shooting a scintillating 70 percent from behind the 3-point line (7-10). Femi Thompson led the way on the glass with 7 rebounds and chipped in 13 points going a perfect 6 for 6 from the free throw line.
The Lions travel on Wednesday to face the Ravens of Anderson University (11-8, 7-5 HCAC). The game is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. tip off.
