Cincinnati, OH.- For the first time since 1994, the Mount Football program will travel to an opponent from the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) to compete, highlighting the Mount's 2018 schedule released Thursday.
The Lions will open the season by hosting Ohio Athletic Conference foe Capital University, the game will be played under the lights at Schueler Field with a 6:00 PM kick-off. The Lions were victorious in the season opener a year ago against Capital, 38-21. The second week of the season is the highlight of the schedule, as the Lions will travel to take on the Eagles of Morehead State. The game will be the Lions second game in program history against a team from the Football Championship Subdivision, as well as the second from the Pioneer Football League. The game is schedule to be played under the lights of Jayne Stadium in Morehead, Kentucky.
The Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference slate begins with a visit from one of the top finishers from 2017 on September 15th when the Mount welcomes Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology to Schueler field for a 1:30 kickoff. Following the conference home opener, the Lions will be on a two game road trip starting in Richmond, IN at Earlham College September 22nd at 1:30 PM, followed by a September 29th visit to Bluffton University with a scheduled kickoff time at 1:30 PM
A two game home-stand at Schueler Field and Homecoming weekend welcomes the Lions back to the Mount when they square off against Manchester University October 6th. The Mount then host 2017 HCAC Conference Champions Franklin College October 13th.
The remaining schedule sees the Mount on the road 2 of the last 3 weeks in a critical stretch to close the season. First, the Mount will travel to Defiance, OH to face-off against Defiance College October 20th. The Mount will close their 5 game away slate the next weekend in Hanover, IN versus Hanover College before returning home for the regular season finale and Senior Day festivities against Anderson University November 3rd.
The Mount has high expectations for the 2018 season. The Lions return 9 starters on defense with multiple players who saw significant time due to injuries late in the season and over. Though the defense was second in Scoring Defense, third in Rush Defense, and second in Interceptions in the HCAC, they look to make significant strides to aide a top-flight offense that was ranked 18th in NCAA Division III in Scoring Offense (40.7 pts/game) and Passing Offense (310.0). The offense, similar to the defense, returns 8 starters with a bevy of players who saw significant time late in the year.
Second-year Head Coach Tyler Hopperton returns four First-Team All-HCAC players (1 Off., 1 Def., 2 ST) and five Second-Team All-HCAC players (3 Off., 2 Def.) from a 6-4, 5-3 team a year ago. The offense returns two-year signal caller and Second-Team All-HCAC Junior quarterback Chaiten Tomlin along with pair of All-Conference pass catchers in Grayson Roberts and AJ Glines while Cole Tepe and Brad Murphy anchor the line. The Defensive front will be spear headed by two-time All-Conference Senior Cory Hardin and Junior end Spencer Kandra while Seniors Logan Bright and Zach Taylor look to provide depth. A pair of All-Conference Linebackers return in Nathan Stone and Sean Sullivan, while Julius Fisher slides in after a strong finish to 2017 and senior Jermaine Drake looks to bounce back. The secondary welcomes back a pair of All-Conference performers in three-time All-Conference Senior cornerback Tyler Hannah and two-time All-Conference safety Tavon Robertson. The secondary returns plentiful experience elsewhere with Senior safety Peyton Williams, Junior safeties Terry Calloway and Gavin Edmondson, and Sophomore cornerbacks Troy Speakman and Josh Knott.
Two-Time First Team All-Conference Senior Kicker Joey Porter returns to handle the kicking duties while a mixture of players will see time as returners, including the returning First-Team All-Conference Returner Sophomore Troy Speakman.
Please come out next season and support your Mount St. Joseph University football team.
