Lions Lose Doubleheader to Hanover

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky - The Mount St. Joseph University baseball team took on the Panthers of Hanover College Friday in a conference doubleheader down at Bill Aker Field at Northern Kentucky University. Game one saw strong pitching from both teams as Hanover narrowly defeated the Lions by a score of 1-0. Game two was more in favor to the Panthers as they defeated the Lions by a score of 7-1 to end the day. 

GAME ONE: Mount St. Joseph 0 - Hanover College 1

In game one of the day both teams had outstanding pitching. Nathan Renner (Pleasant Prairie, Wi/Tremper) got that start on the mound to begin the day for The Mount. Renner would pitch 7.0 innings against the Panthers, facing 29 batters, allowing one run on 6 hits while striking out three. 

The game went scoreless through seven innings as both teams struggled to get into scoring position through most of the game. The only run of the game came in the top of the 8th inning as the Panthers were able to get one on the board. 

Nathan Renner would get replaced on the mound by Wyatt Myers (Waynesville, Oh/Waynesville) during the 8th inning of the game. Myers pitched the remaining 2.0 innings for the Lions, allowing just one hit and striking out three of the nine batters he faced. 

The Lions were unable to score in the remaineder of the game and would drop game one by a score of 1-0. 

GAME TWO: Mount St. Joseph 1 - Hanover College 7

In game two the Lions were able to get on the board but it wasn't enough to compete with the Panthers offense. The Panthers would have another strong showing on the pitching side of game two, causing the Lions some trouble. On the mound for the Lions in game two was Jacob Hughes (Cincinnati,Oh/LaSalle). He would pitch 7.2 innings, facing 33 batters and allowing five runs off of eight hits while striking out five Panthers. 

The Panthers would get things started early; earning their first run during the first inning and taking an early lead over the Lions. They would add two more runs in the third inning, as they built their lead to 3-0 over the Lions.

The Lions would go scoreless until the 5th inning when Garrett Hogan (Hamilton,Oh/Badin) would score from a Ryne Poli(Cincinnati,Oh/Elder) RBI. With this the Lions would bring the score within two as the scoreboard would read 3-1 in favor of the Panthers. The Lions would go scoreless through the remaining four innings as they were unable to bring anyone else across the plate after the 5th. 

Wyatt Myers would relieve Hughes of his duties on the mound during the 8th inning. Myers would face eight batters during his 1.1 innings of pitching, allowing two runs off of three hits while striking out one. The Panthers were not done scoring yet as they would bring in a pair of runs in both the 8th and 9th inning. The Lions would ultimately drop both games to the Panthers as they lost game two by a score of 7-1.

The Lions wrap of their 2019 season on Sunday, May 5th as they travel north to Defiance College to take on the Yellow Jackets in their last conference doubleheader of the season.
