Lions are Swept by Franklin on the Road

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - The Mount St. Joseph University baseball team hosted the Grizzlies on the campus on Northern Kentucky University on Bill Aker Field. The day did not favor the Lions as they were swept. In game one The Mount went out to an early lead but lost it and fell 10-1. The Lions kept things interesting in game two as they pushed it into extra innings but lost it 5-2.

GAME ONE | Mount St. Joseph 1 - Franklin 10

Starting on the mound for the Lions was senior Chris Honebrink (Cincinnati, Ohio/Roger Bacon). He would be retired after 4.0 innings pitched by Oakley Billingsley (Westport, Ind./South Decatur) who would remain on the hill for 3.1 innings. Lukas Palmieri (Fairfield, Ohio/Fairfield) would come in to close out the remaining 1.1 innings, striking out three of his six batters faced. Combined they gave up 10 runs off of 16 hits throughout game one.

The Lions only run of the game came in the first inning as Simon Schaefer (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Xavier) would get on with a single to right field. The next batter up was Roman Rothwell (Monroe, Ohio/Monroe) who blasted a ball to center field earning himself a double and moving Schaefer to third base. Tyrell Anderson (Cincinnati, Ohio/Western Hills) would grab the Lions only RBI of the game as he would hit to the shortstop and be thrown out and first but Schaefer was able to scurry across the plate giving The Mount a 1-0 lead. The Grizzlies would go on an offensive run earning 10 runs during the remainder of the game, leading to a 10-1 Lions defeat.

GAME TWO | Mount St. Joseph 2 - Franklin 5

Senior Alex Wagner (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) would make his way to the mound to start of game two for The Mount. He faced 26 batters throughout his 6.0 innings stint and struck out four. He would give up four hits but none of them would turn into a run. Reliever Wyatt Myers (Waynesville, Ohio/Waynesville) would come in to take over for Wagner and finish out the last 4.0 innings. Myers faced 19 batters during his time on the mound and would inevitably give up five runs off of four hits.

Both teams would hold off until late in the game before making an offensive strike. The Grizzlies would go first scoring two in the eighth inning. The Mount waited until the bottom of the ninth to make their mark as Zack Bell (Hamilton, Ohio/Hamilton) would smash a to right field pushing Rothwell and Schaefer across the plate. The Lions were unsuccessful in their attempt to finish the game there and took it to extra innings. As the tenth inning began and Franklin got three runs and the Lions could not make up the deficit and fall 5-2 at the hands of the Grizzlies.


The Lions next games will take place on Friday, May 4th as they take on Manchester University in a conference double header. The games will take place at UC Health Stadium in Florence, Ky., game one will begin at 12PM with game two scheduled to begin at 3:00PM.
