Lions Drop Close Game on the Road

WESTERVILLE, Ohio - The Mount St. Joseph University baseball team travelled to take on the Cardinals of Otterbein College in a non-conference game on Wednesday, April 24th. The game consisted of top pitching from both teams, as most of the innings would go scoreless between the two teams. By the end of the game, the Cardinals were barely able to come out on top as The Lions lost the game by a score of 4-3. 

Freshman pitcher Zack Bell (Hamilton,Ohio/Hamilton) got his fourth start of the season on Wednesday for The Lions. Bell would go on to pitch 6.0 innings for The Lions, surrendering three runs off of three hits to the Cardinals while striking out two.

The Lions got things started early in the game as they were able to bring in one run during the first inning. Tyrell Anderson (Cincinnati,Ohio/Western Hills) would make it on base from an error by the Cardinal 3rd base, allowing time for Simon Schaefer (Cincinnati,Ohio/St. Xavier) to make in home and record The Lions first run of the day. Both teams would go scoreless in the 2nd inning, as The Lions would hold a slight 1-0 lead entering the 3rd inning. 

The Lions were up to bat first in the 3rd inning, as they were able to bring in one more run. Simon Schaefer was able to make it home again for The Lions from a sacrifice fly by Garrett Hogan (Hamilton,Ohio/Badin), building the team score as The Lions led 2-0 in the top of the 3rd. The Cardinals would bring in two during the bottom of the 3rd inning and tie the game up at 2-2. 

Both teams would go scoreless through the 4th and 5th innings before each team would bring in a single run in the 6th inning. In the beginning of the 6th inning, sophomore Nathan Renner (Pleasant Prairie,WI/Tremper) relieved Bell of his duties on the mound and would go on to pitch the final 2.0 innings of the game. Renner would give up one run on two hits while striking out one Cardinal.Hunter Collins (Middletown,Ohio/Monroe) would score from a single to left field by Simon Schaefer. At the end of the 6th inning the score would be tied at 3-3 each, as neither team was able to gain a lead over the other. 

The Lions and the Cardinals were unable to get any runs in the 7th inning before. The Cardinals would get a single run in the bottom of the 8th inning, taking the lead and ultimately defeating The Lions by a score of 4-3 as The Lions were unable to get a run in in the top of the 9th inning. 

The Lions next games will take place on Saturday, April 27th as they take on the Grizzlies of Franklin College in a double header. The games will take place at Bill Aker Baseball Complex at Northern Kentucky University with game one set to begin at 12PM and game two scheduled to begin around 3:30PM.
