Lions inaugurate HCAC play with a win over the Engineers

CINCINNATI, Oh – The Lions squared off against the Rose-Hulman Fightin' Engineers on Saturday to open HCAC conference play. Originally was set to be a doubleheader, but due to rain the teams only played one and game two will not be rescheduled due to conference rules.

Toeing the rubber for the Lions sole game was Junior Alex Wagner (West Chester, OH / Lakota West) and pitched a phenomenal game. In route to his fourth win on the season, Wagner pitched eight solid innings, allowing just two runs off six hits and three strikeouts. Playing nine innings, Sophomore Garrett Hogan (Hamilton, OH / Badin) would handle the 9th and strike out the side, holding the Lions lead at a final of 6-2.

The Lions bats were hot as they hit 3 home runs for the evening. In the bottom of the 1st and one man on, Hogan would step to the plate and deliver with his first home run on the season, driving in two. The Lions would plate another run in the 2nd inning off an Engineer error.

In the top half of the 3rd, the Engineers scored two runs off three hits. The Lions did not score again until the 5th, when Nathan Hunter (Vevay, IN / Switzerland County) lead off with a home run of his own, totaling two for his season, and expanding the Lions lead to two.

Luke Bowman (Harrison, OH / Harrison) lead off the bottom half of the 6th with a home run down the left field line. The Lions would score one more in the inning off a single from Roman Rothwell (Monroe, OH / Monroe) bringing home Brandon Shelton (Cincinnati, OH / Northwest).

The Lions move to 10-8 on the season and 1-0 in conference play, and the Engineers move to 5-13 on the year and 0-1 in HCAC.

The Lions will hit the field again on Tuesday, April 3rd, traveling to the Pioneers of Transylvania in Lexington, Ky. The teams are set for a doubleheader with game one starting at 1pm and 4pm for the second game. Make sure to check for all your Lion's updates!
