The Lions (6-4) continued play in The Russ Matt Invitational on Monday squaring off with the Rowan University Owls (7-1). The Lions left 8 men on base and struggled with runners in scoring posistion. The Owls capitalized with 7 runs in a huge 4th inning establishing a lead that the Lions could not overcome. Final score on the day was 11-4.
How it Happened:
Rowan was first on the scoreboard with a run in the 2nd inning. To begin the 4th inning, center fielder Ryan Murray (Cincinnati, OH / Colerain) lead off with a single to right field and then stole both second and third base. Shortstop Garrett Hogan (Hamilton, OH / Badin) stepped up to the plate and had a successful at-bat, bringing home Murray and the run. Despite the Lions run, the Owls ultimately won the inning scoring 7. The Owls would score two more in the bottom half of the 6th. The Lions scored again in the 7th, off an RBI triple to right center from designated hitter Nathan Renner (Pleasant Prairie, WI / Tremper). Playing hard for all nine innings, the Mount was able to plate one more run in the 9th off a sacrifice bunt from Murray. Toeing the mound for the Lions was Brandon Shelton (Cincinnati, OH / Northwest), going three and two-thirds, striking out 3, but ultimately resulting in the loss. Handling relief efforts were Mike Hilliard (Loveland, OH / Clinton Massie), with no runs in an inning and a third, Brady Johnson (Peebles, OH / Peebles HS), 2 runs in an inning, Chris Honebrink (Cincinnati, OH / Roger Bacon), no runs in an inning pitched, and finally Trevor Theuerling (Cincinnati, OH / Clark Montessori) with an inning pitched, giving up an earned run.
Freshman Murray had an excellent day at the plate totaling 3 hits and 1 RBI. When Murray reached base he posed a threat, stealing 2 bases and also scoring a run.
The Lions have an off day tomorrow but will play this Wednesday the 14th against The Southern Maine Huskies at 4:45 PM.
