The Mount St. Joseph University Lions, who finished third last season in the conference standings and qualified to the HCAC Tournament, have been chosen for third place this season in the HCAC Coaches’ Preseason Poll.

Defiance has been selected as the preseason favorite to win the 2014 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference championship, as they received a total of 86 points and four first place votes. Bluffton recorded 84 points and four first place votes, to finish as the runner-up, just two points ahead of the third place Lions (82 points, one first place vote). Transylvania and Hanover round out the top five, and they were followed by Rose-Hulman (one first place vote), Franklin, Anderson, Manchester, and Earlham.

The Lions graduated both of their All-HCAC selections from last season. Sophomore outside hitter Jessica Wilgenbusch (Sunman, Ind./East Central) earned a spot on the All-Freshman team, and was HCAC Freshman of the Year last fall. She will look to lead the Mount offense this season. Wilgenbusch tallied 213 kills with 128 digs as a freshman. Senior setter Janelle Davis (Convoy, Ohio/Wayne Trace) will look to pilot the offense after leading the team with 6.05 assists per set during the 2013 season.
