The Mount St. Joseph University women’s volleyball team will begin the 2014 season on August 29 playing in the two-day, Birmingham Southern College Invitational. The Lions will take on Sewanee and host Birmingham Southern on the first day of play, and on August 30 will compete against Covenant College and Piedmont College. The Mount will be home on Sept. 5-6 in the annual Charlie Wrublewski Tournament.

The Mount will be led into play this season by captains, Janelle Davis (Convoy, OH/Wayne Trace), a senior; and Taylor Ruder (Oxford, OH/Talawanda), defensive specialist. Davis, a two-year captain, played in 98 games last season for the Lions, recording a team-high 598 assists, 193 digs and 29 service aces. Ruder, who is a first-time captain, saw action in 43 games in 2013 and had 57 digs and eight service aces.

The Mount finished 16-17 overall last season, and was 7-2 in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference standings. Lions’ Head Coach Jon Bennett is looking for big things from his co-captains in 2014, as well as the rest of the team.

“Janelle has grown into this role and has become a true leader for our program,’’ Bennett said. “We are counting on her to use her experience to provide us with a solid foundation this fall.

“I have watched Taylor grow into this position over the years and I am looking forward seeing what she can bring to this role.”
