Visiting Bluffton University overcame a 2-0 deficit on Tuesday night in the Harrington Center, winning the last three sets as they posted a 3-2 win over the Mount in first round action on the HCAC Tournament. The loss ended the Lions season, finishing with a 16-17 overall mark, while Bluffton moved on to the HCAC semifinals with an 14-18 mark.
The Lions captured the first set, 25-20, jumping out to a 6-3 lead after a kill by Hannah Vanarsdall (Cincinnati, OH/McAuley). A Mount service error pulled the Beavers to within, 13-10, but the Lions went on a 7-4 run, thanks in part to Vanarsdall's hitting. They won the first set after two Bluffton errors. The second set progressed in much the same way for the Lions, as Vanarsdall, and senior classmate Nicole Sherpensky (Cincinnati, OH/Northwest) led the charge to a 25-19 victory. With the score 20-18 Mount, Sherpensky added a kill to put the Lions up 22-19 and a Beavers' hitting error for the last points gave the Mount a win and a two sets to none lead.
The two teams battled early and often in set three for the lead, with 13 ties leading to a 19-all scores. Two straight kills and a Mount hitting error led to a 22-19 Bluffton advantage. Sherpensky tied the set at 22-all with a kill and gave her team a 23-22 lead on a block, but the Beavers scored the next three points of the set, including a block for the final point, to win 25-23. Bluffton rolled out to a 14-10 lead in game two, and led 17-12 after a service ace as the Lions called a timeout. Sherpenky's kill made the score 19-17, and her ace made the score 22-20. Bluffton recorded a passing error to enable the Mount to tie the set at 23-all, and Emily Bostian (Liberty Township, OH/Lakota East) recorded a kill to knot the score at 25, but Bluffton took the match, 27-25, by recording kills for the next two points.
Bluffton jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the fifth and deciding set, but the Lions fought back to tie the score at 11-all following a kill by Bostian. A kill by Jessica Wilgenbusch (Sunman, IN/East Central) tied the score again, this time at 13-all, while Stephanie Chisholm (Cincinnati, OH/Oak Hills) added a kill to tie the score at 14-all and Sherpensky had a kill to make the score 15-all. Bluffton would take the lead by a point, 16-15, after a Mount passing error, and win the game, 17-15, and the match on a service ace.
Vanarsdall had 13 kills and 12 digs in the match while Wilgenbusch chipped in 11 kills and 13 digs. Sherpensky added 11 kills and eight block assists while Emma Beyer (Liberty Township, OH/Mt, Notre Dame) had 19 digs and three service aces.
