Senior Hannah Varnarsdall (Cincinnati, OH/McAuley) had 10 kills and 13 digs, and classmate Nicole Sherpensky (Cincinnati, OH/Northwest) chipped in 11 kills, and five blocks (two solos and three assists) as the Lions posted a 3-1 home HCAC win against Bluffton University on Wednesday night. The Lions, 10-13 overall, 1-1 in the conference, will be back in HCAC action on Oct. 12 when they host Manchester University, in the team's annual Pink Ribbons Girls' game.
The Lions posted the win with set scores of 25-23, 25-16, 21-25, and 25-20 over the Beavers (9-13, 1-1 HCAC). The Lions broke open a close first set with strong hitting, and in set two, posted leads of 10-7 and 17-9, taking advantage of Bluffton hitting and serving errors, to grab a 2-0 lead in the match. Bluffton rebounded to edge the Lions by four points in set three, befre the Mount posted the match victory by rolling out to a 10-5 lead and holding on after taking a 20-17 advantage. Vanarsdall and teammate Jessica Wilgenbusch (Sunman, IN/East Central) led the offense down the stretch, while Emma Beyer (Liberty Township, OH/Mt. Notre Dame) added a key ace to make the score 24-20.
Wilgenbusch added nine kills, along with no errors in the match, as well as three block assists while Janelle Davis (Convoy, OH/Wayne Trace) recorded 26 assists. The Mount hit .264 as a team, while Bluffton hit under .100.
