The College of Mount St. Joseph women's volleyball team got off to a winning start on Friday at the Wheaton College Invitational, The Lions, 8-10 overall, won 3-1 against North Central College and followed that up with a 3-0 victory over #24-ranked Carthage College. The Mount, winners of seven straight, resumes day two action on Saturday, Sept. 28 with matches against UW-Platteville and host Wheaton College.
The Lions started off the tournament at Wheaton recording a close win over North Central College, 25-21, 23-25, 25-21, 25-11. Nicole Sherpensky (Cincinnati, OH/Northwest) led a strong hitting attack, recording 15 kills and a .465 hitting percentage, along with four block assists and two service aces. Hannah Vanarsdall (Cincinnati, OH/McAuley) chipped in 13 kills, nine digs and two service aces. Janelle Davis (Convoy, OH/Wayne Trace) had 22 assists while Torrie Whitmore (Mason, OH/Mason) and teammate Emma Beyer (Liberty Township, OH/Mt. Notre Dame) added 11 digs each. The Lions hit .234 as a team, with one block solo and 23 block assists.
In their second match of the day, the Lions unended the 24th-ranked team in the country, Carthage College, in three straight, 25-19, 25-22, 25-12. The Mount improved their team hitting in the match, connecting on 33 kills with a .289 hitting percentage. Vanarsdall had 10 kills. while Sherpensky added nine kills. Davis and Whitmore had 17 and 11 assists, respectively, while Beyer chipped in 13 digs. Stephanie Chisholm (Cincinnati, OH/Oak Hills) had four block assists.
