The Lions kicked off the first day of the OAC/HCAC Challenge at Capital University on Friday by claiming two wins, defeating Capital. 3-0; and Muskingum University, 3-1. The Mount, 3-10 on the season, resumes action at the Challenge on Sept. 21 when they take on Ohio Northern University and Baldwin Wallace University.
The Lions rolled to three straight set wins, 25-20, 25-17, 25-23, against host Capital. Nicole Sherpensky (Cincinnati, OH/Northwest) helped pace the offense in the first set, recording eight kills. After a close game in the early going, the Mount trailed 15-11 but bounced back to grab a 21-17 lead thanks to three service aces by Janelle Davis (Convoy, OH/Wayne Trace) , a kill by Sherpensky and an attack error by Capital. Sherpensky added an ace and a kill down the stretch, to make the score 24-19 and teammate Hannah Vanarsdall (Cincinnati, OH/McAuley) finished the win with a kill. Vanarsdall and Sherpensky led the Lions' offense in set two, combining for 12 kills as the Mount had 21 kills and eight hitting errors. Vanarsdall's two kills helped give the Mount a 9-4 lead in the second set, and kills by Vanarsdall and Sherpensky pushed the advantage out to 17-11. Three different Mount players collected kills down the stretch, to give the team a 22-15 lead, and Vanarsdall ended the set with a kill. The Lions broke open a 9-all tie in set three, thanks to Emma Beyer (Liberty Township, OH/Mt. Notre Dame) who registered two aces to give the Mount a 15-10 lead. The Mount push that lead to 21-14 before Capital fought back to close to within two, 21-19. The Crusaders committed an error to make the score Mount, 23-21, and after a Stephanie Chisholm (Cincinnati, OH/Oak Hills) kill gave the Mount a 24-22 lead, Sherpensky ended the match with a kill.
Sherpensky had 18 kills in the match, hitting .387 while Vanarsdall chipped in 12 kills. THe Mount had 45 kills in the match, hitting .183. Capital hit only .097 and committed 13 receiving errors. Torrie Whitmore (Mason, OH/Mason)O added 20 assists and two servce aces while Davis had 15 assists and three aces. The Mount had 13 services aces in the match. Vanarsdall added 10 digs while Beyer topped the team with 11 digs.
The Mount won their second match of the day by scores of 25-18, 15-25, 25-22, 25-14 against Muskingum. The Lions were palced by Sherpensky, who had a match-high 19 kills, while hitting .486 and Vanarsdall, who added 14 kills and 14 digs. Beyer added a match-high 21 digs while Davis had 25 assists, 11 digs and two service aces. Whitmore chipped in 20 assists, seven digs and five service aces. Sherpensky and Chisholm each had one solo block and four block assists. Chisholm also had eight kills, hitting .318.
