The College of Mount St. Joseph wrapped up weekend play today at the MSJ Kick-off Invitational, dropping a four-set match to Hiram College, and then suffering a five-set loss to Centre College, marking the second day in a row the Colonels have defeated the Lions in five sets. The Mount, 0-3, will return to action on Sept. 6-7 when they host the annual MSJ Charlie Wrublewski Tournament. The Lions will take on Thomas More College on Friday, and then on Saturday will host matches against Heidelberg University and DePauw University.

In the team's 3-1 setback to Hiram, the Lions tied the match at 1-1 with a 25-10 second set victory, only to drop 25-15 and 25-18 set decisions to the Terriers. The Lions were paced by Hannah Vanarsdall (Cincinnati, OH/McAuley), who recorded 15 kills, 13 digs and two service aces, and teammate Nicole Sherpensky (Cincinnati, OH/Northwest), who added 12 kills and five block assists. Emma Beyer (Liberty Township, OH/Mt. Notre Dame) had team-high totals of 17 digs and three aces, while Torrie Whitmore (Mason, OH/Mason) chipped in 21 assists.

The Lions to a 2-1 set lead in their match against Centre College on Saturday afternoon, thanks to a balanced offensive attack, only to see the visitors bounce back and record a 26-24 set four win and a 15-10 fifth set tie-breaking victory. The two teams played close throughout most of the early action of the fifth set, and with the score tie at eight-all, Centre posted four straight points, thanks to two kills, to take a 12-8 lead. Vanarsdall collected a kill to cut the deficit to 12-9, but the Mount would get no closer as the Colonels scored three of the game's next four points for the win.

Vanarsdall led the way against Centre with 17 kills and 14 digs, finishing the tournament with three straight triple-doubles (kills-digs), and totaling 45 kills and 43 digs overall. Sherpensky added 16 kills, and only one hitting error, in the game, along with two block solos and three block assists. Beyer recorded a team-high 19 digs, and finished the tournament with three-straight matches of double-digit dig totals, for an overall total of 50. Emily Bostian (Liberty Township, OH/Lakota East) had 10 kills against Centre while teammate Chelsea Shanklin (Monroe, OH/Monroe) added 10 digs and three service aces. Whitmore added 49 assists in five sets played.
