The College of Mount St. Joseph women's volleyball team started the 2013 season at home on Friday afternoon dropping a 3-2 decision to Centre College in the MSJ Kick-off Tournament. The Lions were scheduled to resume tournament action on Aug. 31 with two matches - taking on Hiram College and Centre College.
The Mount grabbed sets one and three in their opening match of the season, but lost the decisive fifth set, 15-6. Nicole Sherpensky (Cincinnati, OH/Northwest) led the Mount with 16 kills and five blocks (one solo, four assists). Hannah Vanarsdall (Cincinnati, OH/McAuley) chipped in 13 kills and 16 digs while teammate Bethani Ritter (Cincinnati, OH/McAuley) added nine digs, five aces and two block assists. Janelle Davis (Convoy, OH/Wayne Trace) helped paced the offense with 27 assists and on the defensive side added eight digs.
Set five saw Centre jump out to leads of 5-2 and 7-5, thanks to misplays by the Mount, and take control of the set and match, scoring the last six points of the set for the five-set win.
