The 2012 HCAC volleyball tournament will be held this week, October 30, November 3-4. Tuesday’s opening round games will be played on the campus of the high seed, while the semifinals and championship will be played at the Mount. The Lions claimed a share of their 13th conference championship and earned the right to host the tournament.
Two teams shared the HCAC title this season with 8-1 marks. Transylvania joined the Lions as regular season champions.
The Lions finished the season 12-14 overall and 8-1 in conference play, closing the regular season with a 6-4 record. Transylvania (21-13, 8-1 HCAC) earned the No. 2 seed in the tournament due to a loss to MSJ in the regular season. The Mount and Transy earned a first-round bye after earning the top two seeds in the tournament and will play separate semifinal matches Saturday afternoon.
Action will get underway Tuesday evening as Bluffton (17-13, 5-4 HCAC) earned the No. 6 seed and will face No. 3 Rose-Hulman (20-8, 7-2 HCAC). The Beavers beat the Engineers 3-1 on October 20 in conference play. Bluffton closed the season with wins in five of their final six matches, while Rose-Hulman went 9-1 down the stretch. The winner will advance on to play Transylvania at 5:00 PM Saturday evening at the College of Mount St. Joseph. The Pioneers posted 3-1 wins over Bluffton and Rose during the regular season.
Hanover (18-13, 5-4 HCAC), the No. 5 seed in the tourney, will take on No. 4 Defiance (17-12, 6-3 HCAC) in the second opening round game Tuesday. Back on October 14, Defiance defeated the Panthers 3-2 in northern Ohio. The Jackets enter the tournament winning four of their last six matches. Hanover has been hot as of late, winning five straight matches heading into the tournament. The Mount has the right to play the victor between the Jackets and Panthers Saturday afternoon. The Lions beat Hanover 3-2 and Defiance 3-1 during conference play.
The championship match will be held on Sunday, November 4 at 1:00 PM. The tournament champion will earn the HCAC’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division III tournament that is slated to begin on Friday, November 9.
