Lions' lacrosse player Samantha Hughes garners two weekly awards

College of Mount St. Joseph senior midfielder Samantha Hughes (Cincinnati, OH/Colerain), who helped lead the Lions to a 2-0 record last week, has been named both the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Women’s Lacrosse Player of the Week and Midwest Women’s Lacrosse Conference Player of the Week on offense. This is the first week that the HCAC has awarded a lacrosse Player of the Week honor.

The senior scored seven goals with four ground balls, 12 draw controls, and five caused turnovers in a 19-7 conference win over Dubuque University and added five goals with one assist, four ground balls, seven draw controls, and one caused turnover in an 18-3 win over Loras College. For the week, Hughes scored 12 goals with one assist, eight ground balls, six caused turnovers, and 19 draw controls. Hughes has already broke the Mount’s single season scoring record with 53 points and 45 goals scored this season, ranking first in the MWLC in both categories.

The Mount (6-4, 4-2 MWLC) will host Concordia (WI) University and Fontbonne University in MWLC play this weekend.
