Defiance College parlayed a strong shooting first half from the field, and accurate shooting from free throw line in the final 20 minutes of action, and posted a 76-59 home win over the Mount on Saturday. The Lions slip to 2-19 overall, 2-12 in the HCAC and will return to action on Feb. 12 when they host HCAC-foe Bluffton University.

The Yellow Jackets bolted out to a 13-0 lead over the first 4:55 of the game, with the Mount scoring its first point at the 14:38 mark. The Lions cut into the deficit, 15-9, moments later but Defiance, behind stellar inside and outside shooting, raced out to a 33-20 advantage, their largest lead of the half, with 3:38 left. Defiance held a 33-25 lead at the intermission, thanks to out-shooting the Mount 60 to 28 percent from the field, and out-rebounding the Lions, 22-20.

Brooke Mosler (Maysville, KY/St. Patrick's) hit a three-pointer with 17:46 to play in the game, cutting the Defiance lead to 36-32 and the Lions hung around the early part of the second half, trailing by only a 41-38 margin with 13:44 remaining. Heidi McManus (Bethel, OH/Williamsburg) pulled the Mount to within one point after a basket at 12:14, but the Yellow Jackets responded with a 6-2 run to forge back ahead 49-44 with just over twelve minutes to play. Defiance would pull away down the stretch, limiting the Mount on defense and connecting on lay-ups and free throw of their own. The Yellow Jackets converted all six of their final free throws in the game, sealing the win, their second over the Mount this season. They connected on 13-of-17 second half shots from the charity stripe, held a 27-16 edge on the boards, and narrowly out-shot the Lions from the floor, 44 to 41 percent.

Mosler led the Mount with 17 points and seven rebounds, while Meredith Hartfiel (Villa Hills, KY/Dixie Heights) chipped in 13 points in 13 minutes off the bench, along with six rebounds. McManus added nine points and five rebounds.
