The Lions traveled to Bluffton to face the Beavers on Wednesday. The Beavers were led by two players with double-doubles, whch was enough to defeat the Mount, 67-52. The loss brings the Lions record to 3-17 on the season, and 2-11 in HCAC play. The Mount will return to action on Saturday when they face Defiance College.
The Lions led 5-4 with five minutes gone in the game before the Beavers went on a 18-7 run. The Lions countered with an 8-1 run of their own to cut the deficit to 24-19 on a layup by Brooke Mosler (Maysville, KY/St. Patrick's). The Beavers then streched the lead back to 11 in the first half, but a three-pointer by Melanie Monahan (Mason, OH/Bishop Fenwick) with six seconds left in the half got the Lions to within eight points at the break. The Mount was only behind 33-25 at the intermission, while shooting 31 percent from the field and 40 percent from the free throw line. Tara Dennis (Batavia, OH/Williamsburg) led the Lions in the first half with 10 points and five.
In the second half, the Lions cut the lead to three, when a layup and one by Rachel Blevins (Middletown, OH/Madison) made the score 33-30. This was the closest the Lions would get to the Beavers in the second half. Bluffton streched their lead out to nine points, 10 minutes into the half. The Lions countered with two free throws by Dennis, and a jumpshot by Heidi McManus (Bethel, OH/Williamsburg), which made the score 46-41 with 8:47 left. The Lions would only score 11 more points the rest of the way compared to to 21 by Bluffton. McManus led the Lions in minutes (16) and points (10) in the second half.
Dennis with 14, and McManus with 12, were the lone Lions' players to record double figures in points. Dennis chipped in seven rebounds. Monahan also had a strong game, recording eight points to go along with four rebounds and four assists.
