Host North Park University jumped out to a 10-point lead at the half, and using a solid defensive effort and accurate free throw shooting, dropped the Mount, 51-37 on Saturday afternoon. The Lions, 3-7 overall this season, were scheduled to play again on Dec. 30 at the University of Chicago.
The Vikings grabbed the double-digit lead at the intermission, 28-18, thanks to holding the Lions to 26 percent shooting from the field, including two-of-10 from three point. North Park rolled out to an 8-0 lead and held their largest lead of the first half at 5:06, 22-11. Alex Donald (Litchfield, ME/Oak Hill) led the Lions in the first half with eight points and five rebounds while teammate Tara Dennis (Williamsburg, OH/Batavia) chipped in six points and four rebounds. The Vikings forced 13 first half turnovers by the Lions.
The Mount cut the deficit to eight points early in the second half, only to see North Park go on a run and push the advantage to 38-22 with 13:06 left in the game. The Vikings continued to control the inside game against the Mount, before Rachel Blevins (Middletown, OH/Madison) knocked the deficit to 46-37 with 2:52 left in the game. North Park closed the game on a 5-0 run, while holding the Lions to zero-for-four field goal shooting during the final stretch.
Donald paced the Lions with 10 points and six rebounds. The Vikings were 14-of-21 from the free throw line to the Mount's five-of-nine from the charity stripe. North Park also won the battle of the boards, 42-37.
