Lions have tough outing at Baldwin Wallace

LOCATION: Berea, OH (Ursprung Gymnasium)

THE BASICS:

The Lions traveled to northern Ohio to take part in the HCAC/OAC Crossover Tournament. The whole weekend the Lions struggled to find their groove. The first day they were able to go 1-1 against Ohio Northern and Capital. In the second day they unfortunately dropped both matches and finished the weekend 1-3.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

MSJ vs Ohio Northern

In the Lions first match of the day they didn't look prepared. Ohio Northern was able to build a lead early in the game and didn't look back. They quickly took the set 25-10. The second set told the same story, the Lions unable to control the tempo. They weren't able to gain any ground and lost the set 25-6. The third set the Lions found their footing and fought point for point with their opponents. Unfortunately, the Lions were able to close out the final points and lost the set 25-19 resulting in a 3-0 loss.

MSJ vs Capital

The Lions bounced back from their first match to come out with a win. In the first set the Lions controlled the tempo the whole time. A ten point service run by Riley Brunner (Lawrenceburg, IN / Lawrenceburg) led the charge for the Lions as the closed out the set 25-17. The second set was a tough battle for the Lions as they found themselves down early in the set. The Mount able to close the lead coming down to the final points but a few errors gave Capital the set 25-22. The rest of the match neither team was willing to give up ground ending in close sets. The Lions were able to squeeze out a close win in set three 27-25 led by a service run by Sydney Wilzbach (Cincinnati, OH / Northwest). The fourth set ended in another close matchup with Capital taking advantage of the Lions mistakes 25-23. The Lions were ready to finish the match and quickly built a lead in the fifth set. Continuing with their momentum the Lions easily finished out the final set 15-9 with a kill by Hannah Losey (Tipp City, OH / Tippecanoe).

MSJ vs John Carroll

In the Lions second day of competition they face John Carroll for the first match of the day. The Lions started the first set off strong, quickly pulling away from their opponents. They controlled the tempo of the game until the final points of the game. John Carroll was able to go on a service run that gave them the set 25-23. The second set told the same story. The Mount found themselves leading early in the set but weren't able to finish rallies. The score was tied and once again John Carroll went on a service to propel them to victory in the second set 25-21. The Lions came out dry in the final set of the game and weren't able to dig themselves out of the hole. They continued to fight but weren't able to catch up, dropping the final set 25-17 in a 3-0 loss.

MSJ vs Baldwin Wallace

The Lions continued their dry spell into the next match, allowing Baldwin Wallace to take a quick lead. They were able to bring the match in reach but yet another run by Baldwin Wallace gave them the set 25-14. The Lions came out with more energy in the second set, going point for point early in the set. But a service run by Baldwin Wallace gave them the lead and they wouldn't look back. They were able to close out the set 25-14. The Lions weren't ready to be done but Baldwin Wallace was looking to finish the game. The score was tied the whole match but the Lions pulled away with kills from Hannah Meckstroth (North Bend, OH / Taylor) and Cailey Plemmons (Oxford, OH / Talawanda) to finish the fourth set 26-24. In the final set the Lions weren't able to use their momentum from the last set and quickly found themselves at a deficit. The lead was too much for Lions as they fell to the Baldwin Wallace 25-13 in a 3-1 loss.

THE STANDOUTS:

Cailey Plemmons defended the net while also assisting in the back row grabbing 44 digs for the tournament. Hannah Losey produced offense for the Lions all weekend, earning her All-Tournament team for her efforts.
