HOW IT HAPPENED:
MSJ vs Cincinnati Christian
In the Lions first match of the tournament they faced Cincinnati Christian in a close battle. The first set neither team was able to break away coming down to the final points. Neck and neck at the finish the Lions were able to finish the set 27-25 from an ace by Karlie Schell (West Harrison, IN / Franklin County). In the second set the two teams battled for momentum but the Eagles were able to string together a run. Coming within a few points the Lions weren't able to take the lead back losing the set 25-23. The third set was another close set but back to back aces by Sydney Wilzbach (Cincinnati, OH / Northwest) gave the Lions the push they needed to win 25-20. The Lions were able to fly through the last set 25-18 and defeat Cincinnati Christian in 4-0.
MSJ vs Wilmington
The match against Wilmington was a strong showing for the Lions. The first set the Lions struggled to find their footing but were able to keep the match close. Another strong serve run by Sydney Wilzbach finished out the first set for the Lions 25-18. The second set was a difficult one for the Lions, unable to pull away from their opponents. Making key plays to take advantage of their opponent's mistakes allowed the Lions to take the second set 25-22. The early points of set three told the same story as the last. The Lions weren't able to pull away until an offensive run led by a six point service run by Riley Brunner (Lawrenceburg, IN / Lawrenceburg) to take the match 3-0.
MSJ vs Berea
The Lions were able easily defeat Berea in all but one set in this match. Early in the first set the Lions were able to make long service runs to continually add to their lead. An ace by Riley Brasher (Maineville, OH / Kings) lead the Lions to a quick finish of set one 25-16. Building off of the momentum of the first set the Lions quickly built a huge lead. After a timeout from Berea the Lions weren't able to close out the set, allowing a comeback from Berea. Point for point each team fought to string together a run but finally a kill by Hannah Losey (Tipp City, OH / Tippecanoe) gave the Lions the momentum they needed to win 34-32. The Lions found their groove early in the final set and continued to control the tempo. The final score was 25-16 in a 3-0 sweep with your Lions coming out on top in the Charlie Wrublewski Tournament.
The Lions offense was led by Brunner and Losey both contributing huge kills at pivotal moments. Briana Looney (Harrison, OH / Harrison) protected the net while teammate Schell cleaned up the back row to lead the Lions defense.
