Cincinnati, OH – The Lions were dominant in their last match against #14 Hanover College, defeating the Panthers 3-0 at the Hanover Soccer Complex. With the win, the Lions received a bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament. The Lions will be facing Illinois Wesleyan (13-4-2) in the first round of the tournament this Saturday, November 10th at 7:30PM at host school Washington University in St. Louis, Mo. The Lions finished the season 16-2-3 and this is their seventh appearance in the NCAA Tournament.
Host school Washington University (17-0-0) will face Westminster (11-4-3) in the match prior to the Lions at 5:00PM. The winner of both matches on Saturday will turn around and play on Sunday at 6:00PM.
Illinois Wesleyan defeated Wheaton College 5-4 in overtime penalty kicks to earn an automatic bid by winning the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin. This will be the Titans 11th tournament appearance and sixth consecutive.
The Westminster College Griffins defeated Greenville 3-2 in double overtime to earn a St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament championship and automatic bid. This will be the second time the team has made it to the NCAA tournament.
The WashU Bears defeated Chicago 2-0 en route to their first ever undefeated regular season and the University Athletic Association championship. The Bears are one of the only undefeated teams in Division III and are currently ranked number one in Division III soccer. This will be the Bears 13th straight tournament appearance and 18th overall, winning a NCAA Division III Championship in 2016.
The Lions will rely on Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference MVP Kaylan Gruber (Harrison, OH / Harrison) on offense along with midfielder Jodie Weimer (Cleves, OH / Taylor) on the wing. The Lions defensive core of Taylor Murphy (Batavia, OH / Batavia), Alex Hines (Cincinnati, OH / Walnut Hills), and Emily Reichling (Cincinnati, OH / Oak Hills) will have their hands full this weekend as the Lions look to continue their postseason. The Lions young goalie Megan Gilpin (Fort Wayne, Ind. / Bishop Luers) continues to impress in the post season, not allowing any goals so far.
The first match will be played on Francis Field on the campus of Washington University (Mo.) at 7:30PM. Tickets will be $6.00 for adults and $3.00 for students, children and seniors, and kids under 2 are free. Check MSJSports.com for live stats and live video of the match.
