Mount St. Joseph jumps into first place in HCAC after big win over Franklin

Location: Schueler Field (Cincinnati, OH)

The Basics:

The Lions faced Franklin in a battle for first place in the HCAC.  The Mount were able to strike twice in the first half to take the lead 2-1 going into halftime.  In the second half the Lions were able to maintain this lead to defeat the Grizzlies with a final score of 3-1.

How it Happened:

Mount St. Joseph looked determined as they came in with the opportunity to take first place in the conference with a win.  The Grizzlies looked to hold their spot at the top of the HCAC as both teams were playing with high intensity.  The Lions were able to strike first with a goal in the first minute of the first half by Morgan Knasel (Sidney, OH Sidney).  Franklin was able to tie the score at 1-1 with a goal of their own in the 15th minute.  After a ball was kicked out of bounds the Lions were set up with a corner kick.  Morgan Knasel took the corner, and was able to pass the ball across the goal to set up a header from Stefanie Autenrieb (Cincinnati, OH/ Seton) that would shoot past the goalie for the go ahead score.  This would make the score 2-1 with the Lions ahead as both teams headed in for halftime.  The second half was full of great defensive plays from the Mount.  The defense only allowed 9 shots by Franklin in the second half compared to the Lions 13.  Morgan Knasel would connect with the goal in the 63rd minute to increase the Lions lead.  The Lions would end the game on top of the Grizzlies to steal first place in the conference with a final score of 3-1.

Morgan Knasel showed up huge for her team in the big win.  She was extremely active on the offensive end.  She scored two goals by herself and was able to record an assist on the second goal in the first half.  The Lions defense was able to hold Franklin to 12 shots compared to the Lions 25.
