Strong showing by the Lions in a huge weekend

Location: Schueler Field (Cincinnati, OH)

The Basics:

The Mount was able to come up with two shutouts this weekend as they played amazing defense.  The offense showed its explosiveness, as they defeated Spalding on 9/9 by a large margin of 6-0.  The Lions faced Berea on 9/10, and showed the same intensity to finish the weekend 2-0 defeating Berea 3-0.

How it Happened:

Mount St. Joseph vs. Spalding:

The Mount started the weekend off against the visiting Golden Eagles of Spalding University on Schueler Field.  The Lions defense was spectacular, as they only allowed 1 shot on the goal the entire match.  Jodie Weimer (Cleves, OH Taylor) was able to score first for the Lions giving them the 1-0 lead at the end of the first half.  In the second half the offense for the Mount showed its talents, scoring 5 unanswered goals by Olivia Weber (Edgewood, KY Dixie Heights), Madeline Rechel (Harrison, OH Harrison), Kaylan Gruber (Harrison, OH/ Harrison), and Jasmine Cahill (Independence, KY/ Simon Kenton). This gave the Lions the dominant win over the Golden Eagles with a final score of 6-0.

Mount St. Joseph vs. Berea:

After the big win Saturday, the Lions looked to carry on the momentum against Berea on Sunday 9/10.  The defense for the Lions continued to shine, having another game only allowing 1 shot on the goal.  Madeline Rechel was able to score first for the Lions after an assist from Ariel Huber (New Richmond, OH/ New Richmond).  25 minutes into the game Mount St. Joseph was able to get to the net again as Ariel Huber recorded another assist, this time to Kaylan Gruber for the goal.  This gave the Lions the lead 2-0 over Berea at the half.  During the second half the Lions stayed strong.  They held their lead with great defensive play, and were able to increase their lead with a goal by Lauren Haynes (Hamilton, OH/ Ross).  Mount St. Joseph would finish on top to defeat Berea with a final score of 3-0.

The Lions defense continues to be an outstanding force week to week.  Other standouts this weekend would include Kaylan Gruber and Ariel Huber.  Kaylan had an amazing weekend as she was able to get to the net twice in the first game against Spalding, and again in the second game against Berea.  Kaylan has become a spark for the Lions offense as she continues to help her team score.  Ariel did a great job at setting up her teammates, as she recorded 2 assists in the game against Berea.
