Mount St. Joseph Women's soccer had a very successful weekend as they took on Wilmington College and Salem College. The ladies looked great, scoring the first goal in both games to take control early. Against Wilmington, the Lions were able to play relentless defense to hold their opponent to only one goal and come out with the win with a final score of 2-1. The game against Salem was more of a shootout as multiple Lions were able to get to the net. The Lions were able to finish on top with a final of 3-2 and start the season off with two wins.
How it Happened:
Mount St. Joseph vs. Wilmington:
The Lions faced off against Wilmington on Saturday 9/2, in the first game of the season. The game was full of defensive plays that made for a low scoring game. The Lions were able to strike first after a goal from Taylor Clark (Hamilton, OH/ Ross) with an assist from Kara Vennemeier (Harrison, OH/ Harrison) to take the 1-0 lead about 26 minutes into the first half. The Lions ended the half with the lead 1-0. Early in the second half, Wilmington was able to answer with a goal of their own to tie the score 1-1. But the Lions looked determined, and came back just 10 minutes later to take the lead again with a goal from Alley Schmidt (Aurora, IN/ Lawrenceburg). Mount St. Joseph was able to finish with the win over Wilmington with a final score of 2-1 to give them their first win of the season.
Mount St. Joseph vs. Salem:
Mount St. Joseph continued the weekend on Sunday 9/3 taking on Salem College. The Lions started the game off aggressive. They were able to get to the goal and take multiple shots at the net. Olivia Weber (Edgewood, KY/ Dixie Heights) was finally able to connect with the first goal for the Lions to give them the 1-0 lead 25 minutes into the game. Salem was able to answer quickly as they tied the game up with a goal of their own just 5 minutes later to make the score 1-1. This would be the score going into halftime. The Lions came into the second half looking motivated. Kara Vennemeier was able to score on a penalty kick that put the Lions back in the lead 2-1 just a couple minutes into the second half. The Lions were able to add to this lead after Freshman Jodie Weimer (Cleves, OH/ Taylor) connected with the net to give the Lions a 3-1 advantage. Salem was able to score one more goal but the Lions came out with the win with a final score of 3-2 to improve the Lions to 2-0 to start the season.
The Lions had many standouts in the productive weekend. Kara Vennemeier had an outstanding weekend in both games. She recorded an assist after setting up Taylor Clark for the first goal against Wilmington, and also got a goal of her own on a penalty kick against Salem early in the second half to put the Lions in the lead. Freshman Jodie Weimer was another standout as she was able to score her first goal as a Lions against Salem to extend the Lions lead to 3-1.
The Lions will try to keep the momentum going as they take on Mount Union this Wednesday, 9/6 at 7pm on Schueler Field.
