KISSIMMEE, Fla - The Mount St. Joseph University softball team ended their spring break trip with two more wins on Friday. The Lions defeated the Pioneers of Carroll University 3-1 in game one, then in game two they went on to defeat the Golden Tornadoes of Geneva College 3-2. The Lions ended their spring break trip with a 7-1 record, bringing their overall record to 11-4.
Sophomore Sarah Miller (Fishers, IN / St. Theodore Guerin) would get the call to start the game for The Lions against the Pioneers of Carroll University. Miller would go on to pitch an outstanding game as she pitched in all 7 innings for The Lions, facing 24 batters and only allowing 1 run to score while surrendering 6 hits and recording 4 strikeouts. Miller would earn her 4th win of the season for The Mount.
The Pioneers would strike first against The Lions as they would earn their only run of the game in the top of the first inning off of an RBI. The Pioneers would hold a 1-0 lead over The Lions until the bottom of the 4th inning. Senior Katie Tarter (Fairfield, OH / Fairfield) would step up to bat with two runners on base. Tarter singled to right field, allowing Savannah Sturgill (West Harrison, IN / East Central) to score and earn The Lions first run of the game, making the score 1-1.
The Lions would go on to take the lead in the bottom of the 5th inning, earning the rest of the games runs. Olivia Quick (Sunman, IN / East Central) would score the first run of the inning off of a Brooke Otto (Brookville, IN / Franklin County) single to right field. The Lions final run of the game would come off a single down the left field line by Miller, earning an RBI and allowing senior Hayley Hudson (Hamilton, OH / Ross) to score. The Lions would defeat the Pioneers 3-1, earning their 6th victory of their spring break trip.
Brianna Kauf (Orrville, OH / Orrville) would start on the mound for The Lions in the final game of the spring break trip against the Golden Tornadoes of Geneva College. Kauf would pitch 5 innings for The Lions, allowing 4 hits and surrendering 2 runs while recording 1 strike out before being replaced by freshman Alaina Maddy (Cincinnati, OH / Northwest). Maddy would finish the game for The Lions, pitching for 2 innings, only giving up 3 hits and recording 1 strike out.
The Lions would strike first against the Golden Tornadoes as Alehia Tucker (Covington, KY / Holy Cross) would score off of an RBI by Savannah Sturgill on a pitching error. The Lions would carry the lead until the top of the 5th inning. Two Golden Tornadoes would score off of RBI, taking the lead away from The Lions and making it a one run game with a score of 2-1 in favor of Geneva College.
The Lions wouldn't be down for long as they would score two runs of their own in the bottom of the 6th inning. Savannah Sturgill would earn her second RBI of the game with a single to left field, allowing Brooke Otto to score, tying the game 2-2. Alaina Maddy would step up to bat just two batters later. Maddy singled to right field, recording an RBI as Savannah Sturgill finished making her way around the bases, ultimately scoring the winning run of the game for The Lions as they defeated the Golden Tornadoes in a close 3-2 victory.
The Lions will be back in action on Monday, March 18th against Berea College in a double header at Kinder Morgan Softball Complex. These will be The Lions first home games of the season.
