CINCINNATI, Ohio-- The Mount St. Joseph University softball team sweeps the Fightin' Engineers of Rose-Hulman behind dominant pitching performances. The Mount's pitchers combined for 14 innings of 3-hit shutout softball in the sweep.
The Mount secured a 2-0 behind timely offense and a dominant pitching performance in game one.
The Lions sent Freshman ace Sarah Miller (Fischers, IN/St. Theodore Guerin) to the hill for game one. The freshman has been dominant of late throwing complete game shutouts in two of her last three starts. That streak would continue in this one, as Miller was dominant from the word go, as she struck out two in the top of the first. Rose never even threatened to score against Miller in this one. Her line score was impressive, she threw a complete game, 2-hit shutout while striking out 8 Fightin' Engineers enroute to her ninth victory of the season.
The Lions offense was not great in the game but it was good enough to support Miller's efforts. Savannah Sturgill (West Harrison, IN/East Central) led the efforts at the plate turning in a perfect 2-for-2 day at the plate. Miller and Brandy Bunch (Mason, OH/Mason) each added a hit for the Lions, Bunch delivered the Lions lone RBI in the game.
The Lions again were carried by a dominant pitching performance, enroute to a 1-0 victory over Rose-Hulman.
This time the Lions sent Junior Brianna Kauf (Orrville, OH/Orrville) to the hill start the game. Kauf like Miller before her put together a dominant start. Bri kept the Fightin' Engineers off balance the entire game. She threw the first 5.0 innings of the game, allowing only one, sun aided hit. She did not walk a single batter and struck out 2 enroute to her sixth victory of the season. She gave way to Miller in the sixth inning, who recorded the games final six outs. The Lions pitchers combined in this one for a complete game 1-hit shutout.
Offensively the Lions managed on six hits in the game, with no hitter registering more than a single hit. Alehi Tucker (Covington, KY/Holy Cross), Olivia Quick (Sunman, IN/East Central), Gracie Woodyard (Plainfield, IN/Avon), Hayley Hudson (Hamilton, OH/Ross) along with Miller and Bunch all recorded hits for the Lions. Miller added an RBI, driving the lone run of the game in.
The Lions (17-9, 6-2 HCAC) will travel to take on the Beavers of Bluffton in another HCAC double-header on Wednesday. The games are scheduled to get underway at 3:30 PM.
