Mount St. Joseph falls twice to Transylvania

CINCINNATI, Ohio-- The top two teams in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference squared off at the Kinder Morgan Softball Complex, and the Lions came up just a bit short. The Lions fought back in game one from an early deficit but eventually fell 6-5. Then in game two they again fell behind early but were unable to get back into the game, falling 6-2.

In game one the Lions sent Paige Kiesewetter (Piqua, OH/ Miami East) to the mound. The Pioneers were able to dent the plate early in the game, but the runs would not land at Kiesewetter's feet. Her defense let her down in the top of the first as the Lions committed three errors in the inning, allowing three unearned runs. Transy would remain on top until the bottom of the third inning, when the Lions offense would erupt for five runs. The Lions loaded the bases in the third on the strength of two singles and a walk, thats when Savannah Sturgill (West Harrison, IN/ East Central) ripped a two RBI single into left field. That was followed by a Kiesewetter RBI single, and a double by Brandy Bunch (Mason, OH/ Mason) that drove in two. The Lions held the lead until the top of the 6th inning when Transy scored two to take the lead at 6-5, a lead they would hold onto the rest of the way.

The second game would start well for Transy again, as they took the lead in to top of the first off of Danielle Nichelson (Glencoe, KY/ Gallatin County). Transy would add three more runs in the top of the 3rd inning to take a 4-0 lead. The Lions never quit fighting in the game but were unable to overcome this big hurdle. Bunch again was a bright spot for the Lions as she homered in the bottom of the 4th inning, to cut the lead to 4-2. The Pioneers would add two more runs in the top of the seventh on a homerun. That would settle the final score at 6-2 in favor of the Pioneers.

Even with the losses the Lions remain tied for second place in the HCAC standings. They will return to the diamond on Friday, as the play host to Franklin, the games are set to get underway at 4:00 PM at the Kinder Morgan Softball Complex. The Lions will recognize a truly memorable class of seniors prior to the games, please come out and support this special group of young women.
