Mount St. Joseph put a cap on a successful Florida trip by spliting their two games in their final day of softball.
Brianna Kauf (Orrville, OH / Orrville) got the call for the Lions and was sent to the circle to battle Carroll. Kauf would do a solid job for the Lions, pitching 5.1 innings and allowing four runs to her opponents.
After both teams would put up runs in the first inning the game would turn into a pitching and defensive dual, with only one run being scored for either side until the bottom of the sixth inning.
Carroll would put up two runs in the bottom half of the sixth inning, but Mount St. Joseph answered with three of their own in the top of the seventh, giving them a 5-4 lead. Unfortunately for Mount St. Joseph, they would not be able to hold onto this lead. Carroll would mount a comeback of their own in the bottom of the seventh inning after two errors and a two-out, two-RBI double that allowed them to walk off and secure a victory 6-5 over the Lions.
Paige Kiesewetter (Piqua, OH / Miami East) would be called on to try to earn the split for Mount St. Joseph. Wooster would be a tough task for the Lions and the game would go down to the wire in a pitching and defensive dual. Kiesewetter would throw a complete game for the Lions, allowing just two runs all game.
Mount St. Joseph was shut down for most of the game by Wooster's outstanding pitching as well. In fact, neither team was able to crack the scoreboard until the bottom of the sixth inning, when Mount St. Joseph was able to push three runs across the plate.
The spark was given to the Lions by Morgan Kain (Batesville, Ind. / Batesville), who led off the sixth inning with a triple. She would be scored by the next batter, Morgan Hoehn (Cincinnati, OH / Colerain), who smacked an RBI-single into left field. After a strikeout Paige Kiesewetter would knock a single down the right field line and move Hoehn to third. Hayley Hudson (Hamilton, OH / Ross) would pinch run for Kiesewetter and would successfully steal second base, putting two Lions in scoring position. Danielle Nichelson (Glencoe, KY / Gallantin) was next up and would send a shot up the middle, scoring two more runs and giving The Mount a 3-0 lead going into the seventh.
Wooster would not quit. The Fighting Scots would put up two runs of their own in the top of the seventh inning before they were finally retired, giving Mount St. Joseph a 3-2 victory in their final game in Florida.
LIONS AT THE PEAK
Morgan Kain collected two hits in both games on Friday afternoon. Her final statline for the day would be 4-7 with two runs scored. Paige Kiesewetter also had a good day at the park. She went a combined 2-3 between the two games with an RBI. She also threw a complete game in the second game of the day, picking up a win.
The Lions are back in action on Thursday at home against Denison. They will play a doubleheader with the first game beginning at 4:00 PM. Game two will begin directly after the conclusion of game one.
