Lions drop Thomas More in straight sets

CRESTVIEW HILLS, Kentucky – The Mount St. Joseph University Lions faced Thomas More University Saints for the second time this season. This time though the Lions traveled to Crestview Hills and the Connor Convocation Center. The Saints challenged the Lions throughout the match, but the Lions were able to sweep Thomas More in three straight sets to earn their second victory.

The Lions quickly found their groove in the first set and took a 6-3 lead on a four point service run from Jason Hascher (Miamisburg, OH / Alter). The Saints made quite a few errors which gave the Lions momentum throughout the first set. A small five point run from Thomas More brought the match within one point.  The Lions rallied in the final points and ere able to take a 25-23 set one victory, on a Hascher service ace.

The Lions continued their stellar offensive play in the second half and dominated the Saints. The Saints went point for point with the Lions to start off the set but a five point service run from Rey Sanchez (Arvada, CO / Ralston Valley High School) gave the Lions some breathing room. The Lions high powered offense continued to lead the team and Darrell Swanson (Las Vegas, NV / Arbor View) finished off the set with a five point service run, leading to a 25-10 victory.

The Saints picked up their play in the third set and challenged the Lions in the early points. The Mount was able to take a small four point lead halfway through the set but Thomas More found a way to tie the score at 22. A kill and ace from Nathan Schatzman (Cincinnati, OH / Elder) put the Lions up by two before Thomas More responded with a kill. Hayden Wood (Cincinnati, OH / LaSalle) finished off the set with a kill and gave the Lions a 25-23 set three win and the three to zero sweep.

Zack Storc (Columbus, OH / Bishop Watterson) was all over the court for the Lions, earning 11 kills and 14 digs while hitting an outstanding .588. The Lions serves kept them in the match, acing the Thomas More Saints 11 times.

In the Lions (2-8, 0-0) next match they will travel to Wittenberg University to take on the Tigers for the second time this season.
