Lions unable to come out with win in Jim Coleman Invitational

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio – The Mount St. Joseph University Lions continued their season with a tri-match at Wittenberg University over the weekend. In the first day of play the Lions took on the Lakeland University Muskies and the Milwaukee School of Engineering Raiders. To finish out the weekend the Lions took on the #9 UC Santa Cruz Banana Slugs. The Lions weren't able to come out with a victory, finishing the weekend 0-3.

In the Lions first match against the Muskies took a quick lead but the Lions kept the score close. After back and forth points the Muskies were able to go on an 8-1 run. The Lions fought in the final points but the deficit was too much, resulting in a 25-17 set one loss. Lakeland took another lead to start the second set and the Lions would trail the whole set. After a few potential comebacks the Muskies were able to take the second set 25-21. The third set started point for point, with neither team able to take a significant lead. The Lions took their first lead halfway through the set and continued to hold a slight lead over Lakeland. A kill from Ben Holt (Cincinnati, OH / Roger Bacon) gave the Lions a set three 25-22 victory. The Lions started off the fourth set slow, but found a way to bring back the score late in the set. After back to back kills from the Lions, the score was 24-23. Lakeland called a timeout and found the floor and won the set 25-23 and the match 3-1.

The second match of the night was the Lions best showing of the weekend. The Lions started the first set off slow but a late surge by the Lions brought the score to 24-23. After a timeout the Raiders were able to close out the first set 25-23. The Lions picked up their play but trailed most of the second set. The Lions tied the score and went point for point with the Raiders but weren't able to finish the comeback, losing 30-28. The Mount started the third set off strong and kept a lead for most of the set. A kill from Zack Storc (Columbus, OH / Bishop Watterson) followed by a block from Storc and Jack Spohn (Columbus, OH / Olentangy) gave the Lions a 25-21 victory. The Raiders challenged the Lions in the fourth set and went point for point most of the match. The Lions built a lead after MSOE errors and would eventually lead to a 25-20 victory. The Mount started off slow in the final set which would lead to their 15-9 downfall.

In the Lions final match of the weekend they weren't able to gain much momentum. The Lions had the lead early in the first set but the Banana Slugs would eventually tie the score. After errors from the Mount, UC Santa Cruz would take the lead and go on to take the set 25-21. The Lions went point for point with the Banana Slugs in the second set but errors late in the set led to an UC Santa Cruz run. The second set would end 25-18. The Lions got off to a hot start, leading the Banana Slugs 10-3. UC Santa Cruz continued to chip away at the lead and tied the score at 22. The Banana Slugs completed the comeback and defeated the Lions 25-23 in the final set.

Storc secured All-Tournament team for his performance over the weekend. He had 38 kills and 19 digs over the weekend. Jason Hascher (Miamisburg, OH / Alter) chipped in 26 kills and 20 digs to help the Lions.

The Mount (0-4, 0-0) will travel to Illinois to play three more matches over two days. First will be against Benedictine (IL) on Friday at 8:00PM, followed by two matches on Saturday against Augustana College and Dominican University at 2:30PM & 5:00PM.
