Lions continue to dominate conference play

LOCATION: Adrian, MI & Olivet, MI

THE BASICS:

The Lions traveled to Michigan this weekend to take on the Adrian College Bulldogs and the Olivet College Comets. In the first match, the Lions jumped to a quick lead but couldn't close out the game until the fifth set. In the second day of play the Lions defeated the Comets in three straight sets to end the weekend 2-0.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

MSJ vs. Adrian

In the Lions first match they faced the Adrian Bulldogs. The Lions got off to a hot start, earning a 5-0 lead to start the set. The Lions would continue their strong play throughout the first set, not allowing Adrian to come within five points. Adam Williams (Chicago, IL / Mt. Carmel) capped off a stellar first set with a kill, the score 25-17. The Lions started the second set in the same fashion, quickly building a lead over the Bulldogs. Adrian managed to tie the score but a service run from Williams gave the Lions the lead once again. The Mounts offense kept a solid lead as they would go on to win the set 25-21. The Lions gained an early lead in the third set but Adrian wasn't willing to give up yet. The Bulldogs went point for point with the Lions throughout the set and went on to take the lead in the final points. The Lions weren't able to hold on in the final points and dropped the third set to Adrian with a score of 25-23. The Mount started the fourth set off slow which allowed the Bulldogs to build a lead. Errors by the Lions extended Adrian's lead in the fourth set. The Mount was unable to find their offense to bring them back into the set, dropping the fourth set 25-16. In the final set of the match the Lions still struggled early on. Adrian was able to earn an 8-6 lead halfway through the set but a huge seven point service run from Ben Holt (Cincinnati, OH / Roger Bacon) allowed the Lions to take the lead. An error from the Bulldogs would give the Lions the final set 15-9 in a tough match.

MSJ vs. Olivet

In the Lions final match of the weekend they wasted no time in getting to business. The Lions went back and forth with the Comets early in the match. A kill from Nick Melbardis (Indianapolis, IN / Cathedral) would start the onslaught for the Lions, as they would go on to win seven of the next eight points to take a 18-11 lead. The Lions got a huge push from their bench as they would go on to win the first set 25-16. The Mount continued their momentum into the second set, winning seven of the first ten points. The Lions played consistent defense which translated into kills on the other side of the court. The Lions didn't waste any time as they went on to win the second set 25-14. The Lions were ready to close out the match, continuing their aggressive play into the third set. The Lions held a consistent lead during the set due to errors by Olivet. The Lions finished the set 25-18 with a kill from Hayden Wood (Cincinnati, OH / LaSalle).
