HERMOSA BEACH, California-- Two of the most decorated players in the history of the Mount St. Joseph men's volleyball program, were selected by USA Volleyball to compete in an elite sand volleyball competition. They were nominated for the program by first year head coach Cristina Webb. The team of Alex Vohland (West Chester, OH/Lakota West) and Brett Cooper (Cincinnati, OH/LaSalle) headed west from the Mount to Hermosa Beach, California to compete against teams from all across the country.
The two former Lions went 1-2 during the pool play portion of the tournament. As they won their first match against a team of Division I players from the University of California Irvine. They would drop their next two matches but would still find themselves in the quarter finals. In that match they squared off with two of UCLA's key players from a season ago. Though the Lions would drop the match and exit the tournament the experience they gained can not be measured by wins and losses. This was an opportunity for two DIII athletes to test themselves against some of the best men's volleyball talent in the country.
