LOCATION: Steubenville, OH
The Lions traveled to northern Ohio to take on Franciscan University in a Friday night matchup. The defense struggled early in the game which quickly translated to a large deficit. The lead became too much for the Lions as they were defeated with a final score 4-1.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
In the early minutes of the first half the Lions weren't able to produce any offense. Franciscan was able to strike first with an early goal in the 6th minute to stun the Lions. The offense continued to make shots trying to even the score but nothing would connect. A corner kick gave Franciscan another goal halfway through the half leaving the Lions in a 0-2 hole. One more goal before halftime left the Lions down 0-3 looking to find themselves after the break. Early in the second neither team was able to make significant strides towards the goal. When one team would successfully make a play on the ball the other team would clear the ball to initiate a counter attack. The Lions were finally able to get onto the board with a long goal by Andrew Phelps (Alexandria, KY / Campbell County) in the 81st minute. Unfortunately Franciscan was able to find the back of the net one more time before the end of the game, ending in a 4-1 defeat.
Nothing was able to click for the Lions today, but Andrew Phelps led the offense as he scored his first goal of the season.
The Lions come back home this Sunday 9/18 in a double header against Heidelberg University. The men's play at 1PM and the women's play at 3:30PM.
