Mount St. Joseph (14-7, 11-3 HCAC) defeated the Fighting Engineers of Rose-Hulman (12-9, 9-5 HCAC) by a score of 72-60, rebounding from a loss suffered earlier this week.
HOW IT HAPPENED
A back and forth first half saw Rose-Hulman jump out to a six point lead with 9:43 to play. The Lions quickly cut into that lead tying the game minutes later, with three consecutive layups. Over the final 6:48 of the first half the lead changed hands 5 times. A two point jumpshot by Travis Combs with 7 seconds to play gave the Lions a 28-26 lead at the break.
The Lions opened the second half on an 8-2 run, extending their lead to 10. Rose-Hulman fought back to cut into the lead, but were not able to get their deficit under 5. Andrew Finley had 12 big second half points for the Lions, hitting two huge 3-pointers.
Each team's stat line was relatively similar, the Lions made 8 three-pointers to just 2 for the Engineers.
The seniors carried the day for the Lions, as Joel Scudder led the way with 19 points, Femi Thompson chipped in 16 points, shooting 70 percent (7-10) in the process, and Combs led the way with a game-high 9 rebounds while pitching in 14 points.
Mount St. Joseph plays host on Wednesday to Transylvania (8-12, 7-6 HCAC) with the game scheduled to tip off at 7:30 p.m.
