Lions back to winning ways defeating Manchester

NORTH MANCHESTER, Indiana- Manchester got out to a quick start against the Lions in this one, scoring 14 points in the first quarter. Those would be the only points the Lions would allow in the game. The offense for the Lions got off to a slow start, but they finished strong scoring 24 unanswered points to close the game.

Mount St. Joseph traveled to Manchester, as the Spartans were hosting their first HCAC game of the season. The Spartans would make their fans happy in the early going, scoring 14 points in the first quarter. They scored the first touchdown on a 25 yard touchdown pass, and the second on a 58 yard run. Sandwiched in between the scores was a 38 yard touchdown pass from Chaiten Tomlin (Mt. Orab, OH/ Western Brown) to Nykwuan Presswood (Cincinnati, OH/ Taft).

The Lions would equal the score 14 all only a minute into the second quarter, as again Presswood found paydirt. He went around the left end breaking a few Spartan tackles in his way to a 38 yard touchdown. The defense would begin to find their footing at this point for the Lions. They would get the ball back to Tomlin and the offense, The Mount would strike again on a long touchdown play. Tomlin found DJ Martin (Cincinnati, OH/ Northwest) over the top of the defense for a 40 yard touchdown pass. For the first time on the season, Jerry Porter (Cincinnati, OH/ Elder) would be unsuccessful on a kick attempt. Manchester got into the backfield and blocked the extra point attempt, settling the score at 20-14 at the half.

Halftime adjustments would pay dividends for both defenses as their were only 11 total points scored in the second half. All of those point though were score by The Mount. Porter hit a 31 yard field goal with 5:19 to play in the third. They would add one more touchdown, again on a long play as Tomlin again found Martin on a deep pass. This time it was good for 57 yards, the Lions would add the 2-pt conversion to finish the scoring, the final tally would be 31-14.

The Lions defense was extremely steady after the rough first quarter. They were also very opportunistic forcing three Spartan turnovers.
