HANOVER, Ind. – The Lions squared off against the Panthers of Hanover College over the weekend and came away with a 6-1 victory to close out the 2018 season on a high note. The two teams were scheduled for a doubleheader but had to cancel game two due to rain.
Behind great pitching from the Lions ace Alex Wagner (West Chester, OH / Lakota West) the Lions were able to seal their 14th victory on the year and 5th in the HCAC. Enroute to his sixth win on the season, Wagner allowed 1 run(unearned), off 4 hits, while striking out 7 Panthers in 6 1/3 innings pitched.
In the top of the second with runners in scoring position, Trevor Theuerling (Cincinnati, OH / Clark Montessori) would rifle a double down the left field line to score two runs.
With runners in scoring position again in the top half of the third, Jose Bustamante (Austell, GA / South Cobb) would also deliver a double down the line that would score two more and extend the Lions lead to four.
The Panthers scored their lone run in the bottom half of the fourth off a double to center field.
In the fifth, senior Nathan Hunter (Vevay, IN / Switzerland County) plated a run after a single to left field. The Lions were not finished as they scored their final run of the game, off a bases loaded walk from Brandon Shelton (Cincinnati, OH / Northwest), bringing the final score to 6-1, Lions.
Senior Mike Hilliard (Loveland, OH / Clinton Massie) came in for relief in the seventh inning and his line included no runs off no hits and three strikeouts.
The Lions record for the 2018 campaign is 14-21 overall and 5-11 in the HCAC. We want to say thank you to the senior's for their dedication and commitment to the program and we hope the best in their future endeavors!
